Pastor Leon Huitt was born on December 26, 1947, the second child of Mr. John Henry Huitt, Sr., and O.C. Huitt. He grew up in Perry, Texas.
Pastor Huitt attended Booker T. Washington in Marlin, Texas, and graduated in 1966. He attended Highland University in Las Vegas, New Mexico where he excelled in football and his main study was social work. He was a member of the Board of University of Texas for the JPTA (job search), Central Texas College (CTU) for counselor training. After all this, he furthered his education at Baylor University in Waco, Texas and obtained his Pastoral Ministry Degree, and completed his education by earning his Bachelor’s & Master's Degrees from Guadalupe Theological Seminary College in San Marcos, Texas.
Pastor Leon Huitt accepted his calling on May 18, 1980, and was on the battlefield for the Lord ever since. He served and pastored at Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Robinson, Texas, Interim Pastored at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in McGregor, Texas, and Pastored at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Clifton, Texas.
Pastor Huitt’s home church was New Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Riesel, Texas. He and his family later joined Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Waco, Texas where they served for over 27+years under the leadership of Dr. Rufus McClain, Sr. They were members of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist in Marlin, Texas under the leadership of Rev. Kenneth W. Huitt.
His extensive work history includes working in construction as a cement finisher and foreman. He always loved working with the youth to help them to reach their highest potential. He worked for Brookhaven Youth Ranch where he was the Program Director. He taught fourth and fifth grade at Emma L. Harrison Charter School. He was the founder of Holy Inservice (HIS) Ministry Alliance at Baylor University. Pastor Huitt was also a College Professor at Guadalupe Theological Seminary.
He is preceded in death by his father, John Henry Huitt, Sr.; mother, O.C. Huitt; sister, Gloria Faye Huitt; brothers, James Earl, Ronald Ray, John Henry, Robert Lee and Alvin Wayne Huitt; granddaughter, Carissa Marie Rainey and his other four grandchildren who are waiting on him in heaven with open arms.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory: wife of 49 years, First Lady Geneva Huitt; daughter, Melissa Rainey (Winston, Jr.); three brothers, Reverend Kenneth Huitt (Tinesha), Roland Huitt and Bennie Huitt, Sr. (Charmagne); six sisters, Mae Francis (Charles) Robinson, Sr., Ruby Cooper, Fannie (Vance) Richardson, Sr., Betty June (Randy) Wyly, Cynthia Huitt, and Pam Doveson; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was a Pastor who preached the gospel even when you didn’t want to hear it. Following the words of the bible saying for us to “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” -Matthew 28:19.
