John Perry III was born on September 3, 1931 in New Boston, Texas. He was one of six children from the union to John Perry, Jr. and Febbie Jane Robison Perry. He confessed and devoted his life to Christ at an early age where he united with Prosperity Missionary Baptist Church in New Boston, Texas.
He graduated high school in May 1948 at the age of 16 and completed Prairie View A&M University in August 1952. Later in October 1952, he was drafted to the United States Army, where he actively served for two years, honorably participating in the Korean War. In January 1955, he reenrolled into Prairie View A&M University to complete his Masters degree. During this time, he met the love of his life, Maggie Belinda Williams.
In 1956, John Perry graduated from Prairie View A&M University, began working as a vocational agriculture teacher at Anderson High School in Mart, Texas, and married Maggie Belinda Williams on June 16, 1956. To this wonderful union, the Lord blessed them with three delightful children – Richard, Michael and Anita; two grandchildren – Johnathan and Courtney, and one great-granddaughter – Layla.
John served as an active member and devoted servant of the Rocky Creek Missionary Baptist Church, in Mart, Texas for over 67 years. He was able to serve the Lord in many capacities upon uniting with this church body in 1956. Until his death, he served as Chairman of the Deacon Board and actively taught Sunday School and Bible Study classes each week.
John Perry worked in the Mart ISD school system for 36 years until his retirement in May, 1991. While working in Mart, Texas, he was able to make a difference in the lives of numerous students, colleagues and community members. He has served on several boards such as the Navasota Electric Co-op, San Miguel Electric Co-op, Brazos Higher Education Board and Texas Youth Commission – Mart Unit Advisory Board. He was a current member of the Mart Community Center Board and an advisor to the Mart ISD Enrichment Foundation.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife of 57 years, Maggie Perry; brothers, Roosevelt Perry, Richard L. Perry, and Dell Shields; sisters, Jakie McAfee and Hattie Conway and son, Michael Perry.
He leaves to cherish his memories: devoted son, Richard Perry (Kim); daughter, Dr. Anita Perry; sisters, Dorothy Alley, Barbara Philips, and Doris Neil Walker; grandchildren, Johnathan and Courtney Perry; great-granddaughter, Layla; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
