Johnnie M. Hunt Lockhart, 87, transitioned to eternal life at 5:38 p.m. on Sunday, February 14, 2021, at Hillcrest Hospital in Waco, Texas. She was born on December 24, 1933, in Brushie Prairie, Navarro County, Texas, the sixth child of Rev. Phillip John and Mrs. Elizabeth Marie Jordan Hunt. Johnnie grew up in Brushie Prairie until she relocated to McGregor, Texas where she lived with her sister and brother-in-law, Lois C. and J.D. Boson. There, she graduated from G.W. Carver High School. After completing high school, she attended Paul Quinn College in Waco, Texas, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Education. She later earned a master’s degree in Education from Prairie View A&M University.
Johnnie accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of Saints' Delight Methodist Episcopal Church in Brushie Prairie. Later, she united with Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Waco, Texas where she served faithfully for over 60 years. She was a teacher and superintendent of Sunday School. She also sang in the choir and was an active member of the United Methodist Women. Mt. Zion UMC recently became One Fellowship United Methodist Church, where Mrs. Lockhart continued her faithful membership.
On December 23, 1954, Johnnie married Staff Sergeant John W. Lockhart. To this union, two sons were born, Reginald Lockhart, Sr., and Kenneth J. Lockhart. During John's time of service with the United States Air Force, they were able to travel the world. After his retirement, John, Johnnie, and their children made their home in Waco, Texas. Mrs. Lockhart continued her career as an elementary school teacher at G. W. Carver School in McGregor, Texas. Johnnie was loved by all the students at Carver and she left an indelible mark, organizing and leading the school's first drill team. She also taught at several schools in the Waco Independent School District, including Wiley and Tennison Elementary Schools. Mrs. Lockhart served as a counselor at Crestview Elementary until her retirement in 2005.
Johnnie M. Lockhart was a multi-talented individual, with a gift for arts and crafts. Her home was filled with beautiful art, painted by her own hand. She was known for knitting and crocheting blankets and scarves for her friends and loved ones. She sewed clothes, stitched quilts, and created things of beauty from the most ordinary items.
