Alice Hickman Obituary

Miss Alice Marie Hickman was born to Eddie and Mae Bell Hickman in Chicago, Illinois.

She attended Jefferson Moore High School and McLennan Community College where she studied nursing.

The Hickman family moved to Waco, Texas in 1972 where they joined Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church.  Alice cherished her relationship with God and adored her family which included all the residents of her beloved MaBell’s place

She spent her life as a caregiver. She cared for those that the world often forgot about. She served as a mother, sister, aunt, friend, and grandmother to those without a home, those without someone to love them, and those who just needed someone to care.  She opened MaBell’s place with a vision of providing a safe place for individuals who were often misunderstood because of their mental illness, those abandoned by their families, and those unable to speak for themselves.  She selflessly gave of herself to ensure her MaBell’s residents knew what the word “family” meant.

Alice was called to God for eternal rest on Friday, August 15, 2021, in Waco, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents Eddie and Mae Bell Hickman; siblings, Charles, Johnny, and Ivory Joe Hickman, Mildred Butler, Rose Johnston and Virginia Donahue, and niece,  Shannon Trego.

She leaves to cherish all her wonderful and precious memories: her brother, Jerry Hickman (Angela) and Eddie Hickman, Jr. (Renee); one sister, Gloria McVea (James); 20 nieces and nephews, 43 great-nieces and nephews, 1 great-great-nephew, numerous cousins and sixteen residents of MaBell’s Place.
